A unique experience with a CCTV

I went to my local rehab center the other day thinking that I'd only go there for some trainning in the kitchen and how to walk, but bbut what I didn't know was that I'd be exploring a CCTV. I went into the low vision lab where they keep the CCTV's and my friend turned it on and put a picture under it. She then asked me to tell her what I saw and I was able to see some features of the picture such as stripes and colors. She knew right away that I had a window orf vision or a clear spot in my eye. I kept looking at this picture but never fully knew what it was since I don't have any detail vision. Someone told me it was a cat. They put another picture up and I could tell that there were letters but couldn't make them out. I was able to coun them but not able to tell what they were. All in all, this experience was one that I'd like to try again someday. It may not beenefit me that much, but I still like to look at them to see pictures and some features of them.

Smile, that is very cool. I remember my first experience with a cctv. They can be so helpful!

Well, let's just say that when I was a teenage boy many years ago, There were manz creative things I put under the cctv. The first useful thing I saw were electrical circuit diagrams. Glad you had that experience, Niki.

We had a client at the rehab center where I used to work who had thought she was totally blind until she was shown a CCTV. She and the rehab teacher discovered she had a tiny field of vision in one eye, and her rehab counselor was willing to pay for her to keep coming back and learn to use that tiny field she never realized she had. She eventually learned to identify all 26 letters of the alphabet and after many months even started learning to print using a CCTV. She eventualy got one and was able to read her own bills at home and write out her checks. It was very gratifying for us all to see how much progress she was able to make.

The lady who showed me the CCTV discovered that I had a window of vision that I was using. I think with her help, I can learn to use the vision that I do have.

I'm not sure if this is the right thread to ask this question... I've wondered what would serve me better: a cctv or something like the knfb reader.

Probably a CCTV would serve you better;.

How much vision do you have?

i used the CC TV's they had at school to learn my phone before i got one with Talks. The letters have to be an inch tall and in clear print for me to read anything. Even so I can see 1 letter at a time so I would never benifit from it. they also had a very small one with a camera attachment that was about the size of a small book. I had more fun with it.

I have some vision in one eye. I have an old large cctv that is in need of repair. Over the last year or so, I've thought of getting one of the more portable models. The one that interests me is nearly $1000, so this lead me to think, hmmm, would spending more and getting something like the knfb reader serve me more?

Though, I need to keep in mind, I like to write under my cctv. Hmmm...

Jean, If you're asking how much vision I have, I can see colors, stripes, and some shadows.

The question about a cctv versus the knfb mobile is a hard question to answer without knowing about you and your vision. I'd want to try them both before I plunked down a grand for a CCTV. Some things you may want to ask yourself is how long can you read without getting fatigued or having headaches? What are your goals for using the device? How much writing do you actually do that you need to work under the CCTV for? Could you just use a PC or if you need to write, use handwriting guides? Just some things to consider.

I totally agree with Lou. The last few years that I had enough vision to use a CCTV, my visual stamina was very limited. I could read my mail and write out checks to pay bills, but I could never have used it for extensive reading. So visual stamina definitely needs to be considered.
